Chhaava 2: Vicky Kaushal To Collaborate With Laxman Utekar Again? Here's What We Know
Vicky Kaushal and director Laxman Utekar are reportedly exploring a return to the Chhaava universe. A new film is said to centre on Shahu Maharaj, son of Sambhaji Maharaj, shifting focus from the first film’s storyline. Early buzz suggests discussions are on, but the team has not issued any official confirmation yet.

The interest in a follow-up has grown after Chhaava’s strong theatrical run. Released on 14 February 2025, the historical drama went beyond expectations at the box office. Trade estimates placed its worldwide earnings between Rs 797 crore and Rs 809 crore, comfortably crossing the Rs 600 crore mark.
Chhaava 2 Sequel Plot
Reports cited by ETimes claim that the proposed Chhaava 2 will trace the journey of Shahu Maharaj. The character, also known as Shivaji II, is expected to anchor the narrative. Industry sources indicate that filming could start next year or by early 2028, depending on schedules lining up for everyone involved.
In the first Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal portrayed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj under Laxman Utekar’s direction. Akshaye Khanna appeared as Aurangzeb, while Rashmika Mandanna played Yesubai Bhonsale. The film was produced by Dinesh Vijan for Maddock Films, marking the banner’s first attempt at a large-scale historical epic rooted in Maratha history.
Chhaava 2 timelines, cast commitments and production hurdles
Scheduling remains the main hurdle before Chhaava 2 can move ahead in a concrete way. Laxman Utekar is currently occupied with Eetha, featuring Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role. Sources suggest Utekar would be able to turn to the Chhaava continuation only once Eetha finishes production and post-production work.
Vicky Kaushal also has a packed slate in the coming months. Vicky is shooting Love & War with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, sharing the screen with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. After that, reports say Vicky is expected to headline Mahavatar, directed by Amar Kaushik, known for Stree and Stree 2.
Because of these prior commitments, insiders describe Chhaava 2 as a project in development rather than something about to roll immediately. However, sources add that both Vicky and Laxman are interested in collaborating again on this world. Planning conversations are believed to be ongoing as they explore how to shape the follow-up.
Shahu Maharaj’s real-life story gives the possible sequel a large historical canvas. Born Shivaji II, Shahu Maharaj was captured by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb as a child after Sambhaji Maharaj’s execution. Shahu Maharaj spent nearly twenty years in Mughal captivity, later returning to reclaim and consolidate Maratha authority, making the arc politically and emotionally rich for cinema.
The potential Chaava 2 would therefore move from the father’s reign to the son’s struggle and rule. With the first film’s box office numbers and audience familiarity with this universe, industry watchers expect strong curiosity around any formal announcement. For now, the project remains in the planning stage, built on the success and goodwill of Chhaava.
