Govardhan Asrani Passes Away at 84: Remembering Bollywood’s King of Comedy, His Journey, Iconic Roles & Upcoming Films

Veteran actor Asrani passed away on October 20, 2025, around 3:30 p.m. He had been admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days earlier due to fluid accumulation in his lungs. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he breathed his last on Monday afternoon. His death marks the end of an era in Indian comedy cinema.

Goverdhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, was born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan. After completing his education at Rajasthan College, he pursued his passion for acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Married to actress Manju Bansal, Asrani was known for his simplicity and private life. He shared a close bond with superstar Rajesh Khanna and earned immense respect in the industry for his warmth and professionalism.

Asrani began his film career in the mid-1960s and went on to become one of Bollywood’s most celebrated comic actors. He gained immense popularity with roles in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, Chupke Chupke, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Sholay, where his portrayal of the comical jailer remains iconic. Over his illustrious career spanning more than five decades, Asrani acted in over 350 films and worked with legends such as Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra. He also directed a few films and appeared in several television shows, earning a special place in the hearts of audiences for his impeccable comic timing and expressive performances.
