Nag Ashwin

Nag Ashwin is an acclaimed Indian film director and screenwriter, primarily known for his work in Telugu cinema. He rose to fame with his debut film Yevade Subramanyam (2015) and solidified his reputation with the biographical drama Mahanati (2018), which won multiple National Film Awards.

Early Life and Education

Nag Ashwin Reddy was born on April 23, 1989, in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. He grew up in a family that had a deep appreciation for cinema. He completed his early education in Hyderabad before pursuing a degree in Mass Communication from MIC, Manipal. Following this, Ashwin developed a keen interest in filmmaking, leading him to study Film Direction at the New York Film Academy.

Career

Early Work and Directorial Debut

Nag Ashwin began his career in the Telugu film industry by working as an assistant director to acclaimed filmmaker Sekhar Kammula. He contributed to the making of Kammula’s films such as Leader (2010) and Life Is Beautiful (2012), gaining valuable experience in filmmaking.

Ashwin made his directorial debut with the 2015 coming-of-age adventure film Yevade Subramanyam. The film, starring Nani in the lead role, told the story of a corporate man who embarks on a spiritual journey to the Himalayas. The film was well-received both critically and commercially, establishing Ashwin as a promising new director in Telugu cinema.

Breakthrough with Mahanati (2018)

Ashwin’s major breakthrough came with his second film, Mahanati (2018), a biographical drama based on the life of legendary South Indian actress Savitri. The film starred Keerthy Suresh in the titular role, alongside Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Akkineni, and Vijay Deverakonda. Mahanati was lauded for its direction, performances, and emotional depth, becoming a major box-office success.

Keerthy Suresh won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Savitri, and Mahanati itself won several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. The film solidified Nag Ashwin’s reputation as a talented storyteller in Indian cinema.

Nag Ashwin's latest released movie Kalki 2898 AD, a science fiction film starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan was box-office hit.

Personal Life

Nag Ashwin married film producer Priyanka Dutt, the daughter of renowned Telugu film producer C. Ashwini Dutt, in 2015. Priyanka is associated with the production company Vyjayanthi Movies.
