Biography

Robo Shankar was born on 24 December 1978. He started his career as a mimicry artist and entertainer, gaining attention with his unique robot-style dance moves during village stage shows, which eventually earned him the nickname “Robo Shankar.” Breakthrough in Television Shankar rose to fame with STAR Vijay’s popular comedy show Kalakkapovathu Yaaru, where his stand-up performances were widely appreciated. His witty humour and energetic stage presence made him a household name, leading to multiple appearances on other television shows and as a presenter for the channel. Film Career Though initially offered a role in Gokul’s Rowthiram (2011), his scenes were edited out. Gokul later cast him in Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (2013), which became his breakthrough as a film actor. He went on to appear in films like Yaaruda Mahesh and Kappal before earning praise for his comic timing in Balaji Mohan’s Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014). Shankar showcased his versatility with a negative role in Touring Talkies (2015) and won acclaim for his scene-stealing performance in Maari (2015), where critics highlighted his one-liners and body language. He later appeared alongside leading Tamil stars in films like Viswasam (Ajith), Puli (Vijay), Si3 (Suriya), and Cobra (Vikram). Television Presence Apart from films, Shankar was a regular on several STAR Vijay comedy and reality shows. His television presence helped him maintain a strong connection with audiences and showcased his ability to entertain across formats. Personal Life Robo Shankar was married to Priyanka Shankar, who made her acting debut in Kanni Maadam (2020). Their daughter, Indraja Shankar, debuted as one of the football players in Vijay’s Bigil and later appeared in Zee Tamil’s reality show Survivor. Health Struggles In 2023, fans grew concerned after Shankar lost significant weight due to jaundice during his weight loss journey. Despite health challenges, he continued to work in films and television. Death Robo Shankar passed away on 18 September 2025 in Chennai after collapsing on a film set earlier in the day. His sudden demise shocked the Tamil entertainment industry, with tributes pouring in from fans, colleagues, and celebrities remembering his contribution to comedy and cinema.
