Biography

Soori is a well-known Indian actor and comedian who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. After making his screen debut in 1998 with uncredited roles, he rose to fame through the film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (2009), where his comic timing and the iconic "Parotta" eating scene earned him the nickname Parotta Soori. Known for his strong presence in comedy tracks, he became a staple in Tamil commercial cinema through the 2010s. After years of excelling in comic roles in films like Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, Rajini Murugan, Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, and Jilla, Soori made a groundbreaking shift with his lead role in Viduthalai Part 1 (2023), directed by Vetrimaaran. The film marked his transformation from comedian to serious performer, receiving immense critical acclaim . Following this, Soori took on lead roles in back-to-back critically acclaimed projects including Garudan (2024), Kottukkaali (2024), and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai (2024). Kottukkaali and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai were featured in prestigious international film festivals Berlin and Rotterdam further highlighting his growth as an actor. Early Life and Career Born in Madurai, Soori moved to Chennai in 1996 with dreams of becoming an actor. Struggling in the early days, he worked as a cleaner to support himself while pursuing acting. He played minor and uncredited roles before gaining recognition in Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (2009). His witty screen presence and rural comedic flair made him a favorite among family audiences. Though his roles in Seema Raja and Saamy Square (2018) received criticism, he bounced back with solid performances in Namma Veettu Pillai and continued to balance his career between comedy and performance-driven films. Personal Life Soori was inspired by Rajinikanth’s character in Thalapathi and adopted the name "Surya," which later became Soori. He lives in a joint family, has six siblings, and is married with two children a son and a daughter.
